Villahermosa in times of Covid-19

An Incubator for Youth Entrepreneurship

by | Sep 17, 2020

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Harvard decided that for safety and health reasons, all students would have to take a 100% online curriculum at least for this semester. That meant that I, like most first-year international students, would stay in my own country with remote learning. After thinking about  it for  quite a while, I chose to enroll in the class of 2024.

I decided to take this remote year not only as an opportunity to focus mostly on my academics and classes, but also as an opportunity to get involved in projects that could benefit my hometown. Even though not getting to experience the incredible thing that is to live at Harvard my first year, I came to see this as an opportunity to get involved and further develop priojects to benefit my hometown. After observing and investigating some of the effects that the Covid-19 pandemic is having on our society, it was more than obvious that the economy of our city (and the world) had been really affected by this crisis. However, I also came to notice the incredible response that the young members of our community had in the face of these complex times.

Little did we know, this wasn’t just the start of a global health crisis, but would also be a one-of-a-kind opportunity for entrepreneurs. And the same way we have seen this pandemic further unveil some of the major problems in our society, we have also seen the rise of people working to make the most out of this unconventional situation we have suddenly found ourselves.

Some of the initiatives have successfully found a way to thrive during one of the major financial recessions we have seen by taking advantage of the uprising online business boom, as well as creating altruist initiatives. I learned a lot from these young people and want to share some advice from the founders of these initiatives to young people who may be hesitant to start their own businesses or who want tips on how to make their existing ones to prosper during this new normality.

The first business I´ll talk about is “ Los Tequeños de Villahermosa,” run by the 19-year-old tabasqueño, Carlos Baeza. “Los Tequeños de Villahermosa” is an online food-business selling a variety of gourmet Tequeños (seen in the picture below), which are Venezuelan snacks. He had planned this business even before the pandemic struck on Villahermosa, but it actually started up two weeks before the government sent everyone to quarantine. Carlos finds his unshakable motivation through his family and in the strong desire to achieve his dreams. He started with a few orders, preparing everything in his kitchen. And now, four months later, he upgraded his business to a food app and became part of the network of young entrepreneurs here in Tabasco.

I also had the opportunity to speak with a group of students spread across Mexico about another incredibly exciting and distinctive project they created. Juan Fransico Sámano, a member of the group, explained “Melomanía Tercermundista,” a music discusión podcast “in which we talk about the wide variety of music that exists nowadays, and about topics related to the music industry in a more casual conversation format than the average media that focuses on this area.” The podcast includes topics of conversation such as new album drops, artists and other music-related themes with a very original and easygoing approach that has undoubtedly caught the attention of many young people in Tabasco.

In addition to commercial ventures, Tabasco has also sprouted some other altruistic organizations that work to support affected people during the crisis by bringing together groups of individuals for a bigger cause. Such is the case of “Saldremos Juntos,” a non-profit that has delivered more than 400 box lunches to the healthcare workers of Villahermosa, along with encouraging phrases. The program solicits monetary and in-kind donations from local residents and businesses to help them achieve their goal of assisting every Covid-19 hospital in Villahermosa.

Now, all these initiatives range from diverse áreas of focus: from food-delivery to entertainment to non-profit. But what is that they all have done to achieve their success? They told me their advice is to “create an interesting, meaningful, and entertaining project so that the engagement with the audience can be much easier to maintain.” The previous was some excellent advice, whether you are talking about a podcast, food-related business, an online blog, or an Instagram page: “make an initiative you would like to participate in and define your target audience.” Another recommendation is also to “engage in topics and áreas that you like, so it won’t be hard to maintain the flow of your project.”

On the other hand, don’t forget that it is not easy to make a business of any kind to grow; Carlos Baeza recommends “never forget that it is much harder to bring your ideas to life, especially when on your own. Don’t be scared to rely on other people or to ask for help. Search for a group that can help you grow both your business and yourself, and that share your desire of dreaming big”. He also agrees that “setting short and long term goals, and being organized with your time, can be some of the most crucial challenges that will determine your future success, not only in your business but in life.”

As a Tabasqueña, I couldnt not be prouder to see what these (and so many other) entrepreneurs have been able to achieve in the midst of this complex situation we are going through. They have also helped me to remember that with the right mindset, we can always thrive in any situation we can find ourselves in. I am beyond excited to see what these projects look like in the future.
