Resilience of the Human Spirit

Seizing Every Moment

by | Apr 18, 2024

In the heart of Chicago, where I grew up, amidst the towering shadows of adversity, the lingering shadows of generational demons and the aroma of temptation, the key to the gateway of resilience and determination was inherited. The streets of my childhood neighborhood became, for many, prisons of poverty, plundering, crime and poor opportunity.

However, amidst the despair that filled the walls of my room, a glimmer of hope emerged—a spark ignited. I vividly remember one particular evening gazing at the sky and the hues of the setting sun as I sat on the balcony of my apartment stoop, lost in thought as I traced the cracks on the pavement. Surrounded by the city’s symphony among the invisible cloud of witnesses, I silently vowed to defy the odds stacked against me. Many call it “the resilience of the human spirit.” I call it destiny.

Throughout my academic journey, I have encountered instances where judgment was passed based on superficial factors such as appearance or background. However, I have always strived to rise above such biases, recognizing the importance of treating others with fairness, respect and empathy.

This is why I have decided to initiate the Isaiah Jordan Community Impact Scholarship. Through this scholarship for students at my alma mater, Wendell Phillps High School, and Morehouse College, an institution I have long admired, I aim to create a culture of inclusivity and understanding where individuals are valued for their contributions and character rather than superficial attributes or mistakes.

Embracing a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset, as defined by psychologist Carol Dweck, is the conviction that one’s abilities and intelligence can be developed over time through meaningful experiences, tremendous effort and resilience. A growth mindset is distinct from a fixed mindset, which perceives intelligence and abilities as stagnant traits that are constant and unchangeable. Research reveals that individuals with a growth mindset are more likely to embrace challenges, persevere through obstacles, and ultimately attain greater success in both personal and professional endeavors.

In my journey, cultivating a growth mindset has been instrumental in overcoming the various challenges I faced. By embracing the repercussions of my erroneous choices, I discovered avenues for personal development as opposed to justifications or excuses. While I have effectively navigated the challenges, obstacles and intricacies of life with optimism, I am cognizant of the fact that I operate in an environment where the odds are frequently stacked against me involuntarily. My identity as a Black and Hispanic man, often viewed as a “disruption” in a world riddled with prejudice, has now become my greatest asset. It has taught me the power of resilience and the importance of recognizing the special strengths embedded within my minority status.

Oh, To Be A Harvard Man

As I approach the end of my time at Harvard Business School, I reminisce about the experiences I have had with great fondness and wonderful memories. Harvard Business School changed my life. I not only obtained academic knowledge and skills but also mastered the art of embracing challenges and upholding unyielding effort as a path to mastery. I never quit. Surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the world, I learned to push past my limitations and continually strive for excellence.

My time at Harvard wasn’t just about acquiring a certification; it was about adopting a mindset—a mindset that propelled me to see every obstacle as an opportunity, every setback as a stepping stone, and every effort as a catalyst for my growth. Through this lens, I transformed challenges into opportunities, paving the way for a future defined not by limitations but also by limitless potential.

Changing the Narrative for Black and Hispanic Men

Writing and redefining the narrative for Black and Hispanic individuals involves reframing perceived deficits into strengths, emphasizing resilience and embracing cultural appreciation. It is our duty to confront and challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions that often plague minority communities with disenfranchisement through misinformation and injustice. Research conducted by scholars like Angela Duckworth and Geoffrey L. Cohen suggests that emphasizing the cultural assets of all community stakeholders, as well as the strengths and talents within minority communities, can lead to improved outcomes and a greater sense of empowerment. I have also found this to be true. By celebrating the resilience, contributions and cultural depth of Black and Hispanic men, we can shift the focus from deficits to strengths, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for personal and professional growth regardless of one’s upbringing or childhood.

Humble beginnings taught me unforgettable lessons that shaped my character. I had invaluable experiences that sculpted me into the man I am today. Every challenge and every setback was a ceiling that eventually became my floor. At the time, it was unsettling, but it propelled me towards destiny.

Living in the Present Moment

Undeniably, the importance of living in the moment cannot be overstated, especially in a world where tomorrow is not promised. Harvard’s opportunities have greatly influenced me, inspiring me to seize each day with a strong sense of intention. Most importantly, I want to use my mistakes as lessons for further introspection, growth, and development. Thanks to the opportunities provided by Harvard, I was able to tap into a vast array of knowledge, resources, and connections. This propelled me towards my goals with greater purpose and determination. Through my experiences at Harvard, I have gained valuable insights into the importance of embracing the present moment with enthusiasm and gratitude, as each day is a precious gift that should be utilized to its fullest potential.

One of the key elements in living in the present moment is remaining steadfast to your values and principles, exemplified by countless individuals who have refused to compromise their integrity in the face of adversity. One such story that comes to mind is that of Rosa Parks, whose defiance against reserving a seat on a segregated bus ignited a significant civil rights movement. Despite facing immense pressure and backlash, Parks remained steadfast in her convictions, demonstrating the power of moral clarity and courage. Similarly, I have witnessed the resilience and strength of adhering to my own spiritual values, even in the most challenging circumstances. This is something I would have told my younger self. By staying true to ourselves and our principles, we not only navigate adversity with grace and integrity but also inspire others to do the same.

Living by High Standards and a Pure Heart

Ethics and integrity serve as the cornerstone of my personal and professional success, shaping how I interact with the world as I wish to leave a rich legacy behind.

I firmly believe that upholding stringent principles of conduct and maintaining a sincere commitment to morality not only exemplifies a matter of integrity but also the most genuine reflection of one’s character.

Living by principle has greatly impacted my relationships, career, and personal fulfillment. By prioritizing ethics and integrity in my interactions, I have forged strong, meaningful connections with individuals who share similar values and principles. These relationships have served as pillars of support and guidance, propelling me towards my goals and enriching my journey with anecdotes and wisdom. Through mutual respect and trust, these relationships have blossomed into lifelong friendships and partnerships, contributing to both my personal growth and professional success.

The Journey Ahead

My responsibilities encompass a broad spectrum of obligations, from ensuring my health and well-being to contributing positively to my family, community and society. With success comes the inherent responsibility to uplift and empower others, leveraging my resources and influence for the greater good. Personally, I am dedicated to utilizing my achievements to bring about beneficial transformation in my community and beyond, be it through philanthropic endeavors, mentorship or advocacy initiatives. By investing in education and economic development, I aim to create opportunities for those who have been marginalized and underserved, empowering them to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to society. One of my favorite Bible verses, Matthew 5:9, reads, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God.”

From the streets of Chicago to the halls of Harvard Business School, my story is a testament to the power of embracing challenges, living with purpose and pushing through with resilience. As I’ve navigated through life’s twists and turns, I’ve come to understand the importance of adopting a growth mindset, seizing every opportunity, and positively impacting my community by paying it forward. Through dedication and faith, I charted a path to success, not only as a leader in the real estate industry but also as a beacon of hope within my community. Today, as a father and philanthropist, I remain steadfast in my commitment to excellence, knowing that by living purposefully, upholding high standards and nurturing my divine destiny, I can leave a legacy of impact and inspiration for generations to come.

Ask yourself today what you can do to start making a positive change in your life and the lives of those around you. Whatever it is, each action has the potential to start a ripple effect at Harvard and beyond.
