When I heard the news about my upcoming trip to Mexico, a surge of excitement coursed through me, and I immediately felt the urge to share this exhilarating news with my close friends and family. However, as I stepped out of the classroom to make that call, a wave of hesitation washed over me. I had only recently come out to my mom and received an unaccepting response. Both of us needed time to process and navigate this new chapter in our relationship. Nonetheless, I decided to call, hoping that she would share in my enthusiasm. Instead, her words mirrored the night I came out, conveying fear and worry about my safety in Mexico.

Throughout my childhood, I had yearned to visit Mexico. Unfortunately, several barriers prevented me from realizing this dream. Primarily, the challenging financial circumstances of my family hindered any possibility of travel, while the absence of close family ties in Mexico further complicated matters. Moreover, my parents had always bearded reservations about sending their children, who had never traveled abroad before, to a country they had left behind in search of better opportunities and resources.

Nevertheless, I refused to allow the negative notions planted by my parents to taint my vision of this trip. I was determined to explore the captivating beauty of Mexico City, immersing myself in its rich culture, breathtaking sights, and, of course, its mouthwatering cuisine. I aimed to unveil the layers of Mexico’s history and discover the stories that lay beneath its vibrant surface. Ultimately, I hoped to encounter three elements of beauty on this journey: the nurturing of relationships, experiencing the wonders of nature and fueling my passion within my chosen field of work.

With these aspects at the forefront of my mind, the pinnacle of significance during this journey was my personal growth and the reconnection with my cultural roots. I was born in Monterey Park, Los Angeles, surrounded by my three older siblings and my parents, who had migrated from Guadalajara. As I matured, I witnessed the intricacies and challenges of embracing my Mexican cultural identity within my mixed-status family, underscored by the constant fear of deportation. As a result, my understanding of both my family’s culture and Mexico itself remained limited. Thus, this trip presented a unique opportunity for me to delve deeply into my roots, fostering personal growth and a profound connection with my heritage.

Growth in Relationships and Friendships

During my time in Mexico, I had the privilege of meeting individuals whose stories unfolded like captivating narratives. I listened intently as they shared their journeys, revealing the intricate challenges faced by families who had immigrated and the complex obstacles that children faced in their quest for a better future. It was eye-opening and deeply personal, as it prompted me to initiate conversations within my own family during my time in Mexico, unearthing narratives that were previously unknown to me. It was a significant moment as it marked a renewed communication after a period of reduced contact following my coming out.

I had the chance to connect with my dad and mom through calls and FaceTime discussions. In particular, my dad opened up about his struggles with family dynamics and shared insights into his solo path of carving out a life for himself. Similarly, my mom revealed her own experiences and hardships. These newly discovered aspects of my family history ignited a newfound desire to delve even deeper into my ancestral roots.

These intimate exchanges were juxtaposed against Mexico’s rich pre-colonial history, a constant presence that served as a wellspring of inspiration. Learning about the struggles and triumphs of indigenous communities and their resilience in the face of colonization offered a powerful perspective, opening my eyes to the narratives of strength and perseverance that continue to shape contemporary Mexico.

Furthermore, my time abroad allowed me to fully embrace and love myself, as I found solace and acceptance within a supportive network of queer friends and a community that celebrated our diverse identities. Liberated and surrounded by those who understood and uplifted me, I discovered a newfound reassurance in my skin. The constant presence of people like me throughout the day provided profound affirmation. Additionally, the love and acceptance I received from Latinx elders, a dimension previously unencountered, added another layer of significance to my journey of self-discovery. Their support and validation brought forth new insights into identity and belonging, expanding my understanding of myself and my place in the world.

Xochimilco: A Transformative Experience

Stepping out of the van, I immediately sensed the palpable difference in the air. With clear nostrils, I breathed freely. Surrounded by verdant forests, the lively atmosphere emanating from the people, and the gentle breeze wafting from the water, I felt an instant connection to the earth. It was in Xochimilco, a place overflowing with life and vibrant ecosystems, that I absorbed valuable lessons.

Interacting with members of the community, I discovered the importance of maintaining a harmonious ecosystem that offers abundant resources, from sustenance to communal support and fertile land. Participating in workshops led by local community members expanded my understanding of this intricate balance. I attended a workshop on traditional planting methods, where I witnessed the meticulous process of sowing seeds and felt the gratifying sense of gratitude expressed at each step. The reverence and appreciation for the Earth infused each movement—digging holes in the soil, placing delicate seeds, and watering them. It was a beautiful display of how their planting activities were not solely rooted in pragmatic necessity but also reflected a profound connection to the Earth and the significance of their contribution to the community’s well-being.

Witnessing this mindset had a deep impact on me, sparking contemplation on the fast-paced nature of my life back at college. At times, it was easy to forget the privilege of access to abundant resources at my whim, without truly acknowledging their origin or the cost. In contrast, the people I encountered in Xochimilco viewed life through a different lens, starting with the humble act of planting crops and envisioning something greater than themselves—a shared vision that would fortify and sustain their community.

Moreover, their way of life sheds light on the consequences of our seemingly boundless access. It drew my attention to the flipside of convenience—the environmental toll. Mexico City’s polluted air served as a constant reminder of the impact of our actions on global warming. The ease with which we consume products and utilities, such as water, often obscures the consequences of waste generation. My time in Mexico City fostered a heightened environmental consciousness within me, compounding my determination to reduce my ecological footprint.

Passion for Global Health Research and Continued Interest in Healthcare

My internship with Atentamente, a group of multidisciplinary professionals specialized in mental and socio-emotional training, provided me with a priceless opportunity to immerse myself in the field of global health research in Latin America. Serendipitously, I found myself drawn further into a project that resonated deeply with me. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in an invitation to join a group of dedicated researchers, doctors, and academics who were creating a mental health app specifically tailored to healthcare providers in Mexico. This project, known as PIBSE Health, aimed to support character strength development and enhance the mental health and well-being of Mexican healthcare providers. Given the circumstances, both the demand for online platforms and the urgent need for mental health support within the healthcare community have reached unprecedented levels.

Engaging in this project expanded my understanding of the complexities surrounding mental health and underscored the pivotal role that technology and digital interventions can play in addressing these challenges. It also allowed me to witness firsthand the interconnectedness of global health, mental well-being and the utilization of innovative platforms to raise awareness and facilitate change.

Moreover, the ever-present influence of the pandemic sparked a profound interest in global health. The unyielding waves of adversity unveiled the vulnerabilities within healthcare systems worldwide, emphasizing the importance of preparedness, resilience, and equitable access to healthcare services. My time with Atentamente deepened my understanding of health and highlighted the significance of platforms like theirs in amplifying global health issues, fostering awareness, and galvanizing action.

I feel exceedingly privileged to have collaborated closely with the organization’s board, working towards advancing their mission and fostering interest in global and mental health, not only within Mexico but also across Latin America. This experience affirmed the path I wish to pursue—a path that merges my passion for social justice, healthcare, and empowering marginalized communities.

A Transformative Backdrop

Through this journey of growth and self-exploration, I now hold a newfound aspiration to return to Mexico City one day. I hope that, when that opportunity arises, my family’s status will no longer pose barriers to their ability to join me. I dream of a time when my queer identity will not impede my family’s acceptance but instead serve as a catalyst for understanding and solidarity. The fight for acceptance and understanding all started with the stories shared between us, stories that have resonated deeply within me, shaping the person I am today.

Mexico became a transformative backdrop for my personal and intellectual growth. It was a canvas on which relationships bloomed, values deepened, and passions ignited. The multifaceted beauty of Mexico—its rich history, its vibrant ecosystems, and its resilient communities—has forever imprinted on my journey of self-discovery.

Resilience of the Human Spirit: Seizing Every Moment

In the heart of Chicago, where I grew up, amidst the towering shadows of adversity, the lingering shadows of generational demons and the aroma of temptation, the key to the gateway of resilience and determination was inherited. The streets of my childhood neighborhood became, for many, prisons of poverty, plundering, crime and poor opportunity.
