The Days and the Neighbors I Didn’t Know I Had

Laura Vásquez Saturno is featured in the digital exhibition, “Documenting the Impact of Covid-19 through Photography: Collective Isolation in Latin America,” sponsored by ReVista and the Art, Culture, and Film program at Harvard’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS.)

The resulting exhibition, based on an Open Call for Photography launched in July 2020,  aims to create a critical visual record of our unprecedented times so they can be remembered by future generations. 2020 will be remembered as a watershed year in which a pandemic laid bare the inequalities and fissures within our society. It has also underscored the importance of living and participating in communities even while experiencing the pandemic in isolation. The exhibition seeks to promote a regional perspective from Latin America and the Caribbean of the collective isolation imposed by Covid-19.

 

Now there is time to sit and watch. Life becomes contemplation of the landscape of the windows, the waiting and the observation are released, because the time is presented in a strange way. Daily rituals that remained invisible and that are now part of our stories and be part of others, feel reflected

Fragments of bodies through the streets, among trees, fragments of them between my window and their houses, encounters with the other in the distance becomes luck every day. At noon we look for the sun and sometimes the sun finds us, nomads appear on the roofs, the moon in the house, a fish in the sky and a tree spying on me, the horizon of windows, neighbors that exist and do not move.

The afternoon returns, some seek light, some seek air and others seek solitude. My neighbors appear and disappear

Every day seems like another.

Los días y los vecinos que no sabía que tenía

Las fotos de Laura Vásquez Saturno fueron seleccionado para la exposición, “Documentando el impacto de Covid-19 a través de la fotografía: Aislamiento colectivo en Latinoamérica”, auspiciado por ReVista y el Art, Culture, and Film program del David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS) de Harvard. 

La exposición, resultado de el concurso de fotografía anunciado en Julio 2020,  busca crear un registro visual de estos tiempos sin precedentes y contribuir a nuestra futura memoria histórica. 2020 será recordado como una año decisivo en el que una pandemia dejó al descubierto las desigualdades y fisuras dentro de nuestra sociedad y la relevancia de vivir y participar de la vida en comunidad incluso mientras se vive la pandemia de forma aislada. La muestra procura promover una perspectiva regional del aislamiento colectivo impuesto por el Covid-19 desde América Latina y el Caribe. 

 

Ahora, hay tiempo para sentarse y observar. La vida se convierte en la contemplación del paisaje desde las ventanas, la espera y la observación se liberan, porque el tiempo se presenta de manera extraña. Rituales diarios que permanecieron invisibles y que ahora hacen parte de nuestros relatos y ser parte de los de otros, sentirnos reflejados

Fragmentos de cuerpos por las calles, entre árboles, fragmentos de ellos entre mi ventana y sus casas, el encuentro con el otro en la distancia se vuelve suerte cada día.

A mediodía buscamos el sol y a veces el sol nos encuentra, aparecen nómadas en los techos, la luna en la casa, un pez en el cielo y un árbol espiándome, el horizonte de ventanas, vecinos que existen y no se mueven.

La tarde regresa, unos buscan luz, unos buscan aire y otros buscan soledad. Mis vecinos aparecen  y  desaparecen

Cada día parece otro.

Laura Vásquez Saturno is a photographer and graphic designer. She has exhibited at Fotográfica Bogotá 2017, ColombianPhotography Hall, Colsubsidio Art Museum and IMAGO MUNDI. Her work revolves around the resignification and reconstruction, the memory and the temporality of the image.
